Description and Responsibilities:
Health Screening Clinic volunteers do medical intakes and simple lab tests (blood sugar tests, urinalysis, pregnancy tests) with patients, follow doctor's instructions to give patients referrals to nearby clinics and Highland Hospital, and enter patient information into our medical record system.
Volunteers work with a diverse population of patients. They are mostly Latino or Mongolian, are low-wage workers or unemployed individuals primarily, often have limited to no literacy, and are typically unfamiliar with the U.S. healthcare system. Working with patients requires thinking holistically about health--i.e. not just in a clinical context but also in a sociocultural context.
Required Skills:
- Volunteers MUST speak Spanish, Mongolian, or Mam fluently or near fluently.
- No experience in a clinical environment is necessary. We will train you.
Desired Skills:
- Experience working in immigrant communities is very valuable.
Schedule: Volunteer shifts are Mondays from 10:00am-3:00pm OR Wednesdays from 12:30pm-6:00pm. Applicants need to be able to commit to 1 entire shift each week for a minimum of 4 months.
Description and Responsibilities:
1) Assist day laborers and other clients that come to Street Level Health Project seeking help accessing health, housing, legal, and employment services. Make identification cards for individuals who otherwise can't acquire identification necessary to access services and provide simple know your rights information regarding how to handle interactions with police and immigration agents.
2) Do outreach on the street with day laborers about Street Level services and sexual health and occupational safety and health issues.
3) Work on independent projects that support Street Level's medical services, development program, computer lab, and street outreach.
Health navigation Interns spend a significant portion of their time addressing the social indicators of health--chronic/communicable disease, crime/violence, mental health, employment/income, education, homelessness. This strategy is critical to preventive health and health management. Moreover, recent immigrants often deal with feelings of isolation, intimidation, and limited awareness of services. They feel confident and become empowered after successfully securing the services they need.
Past Health Navigator interns have appreciated the high level of responsibility they're given, the direct contact with clients, and the strong sense of community at Street Level. Interns get to observe/recognize the challenges local residents experience firsthand (lack of transportation, illiteracy, language obstacles, wage theft, etc). This internship is especially useful to people interested in public health issues, immigration, and social work. It does not involve clinical patient care.
